The Story of
Orc Village Volume 2
Orc Village Volume 2 is a "sequel" to Meshbox Design's Orc Village Volume 1.
Orc Village Volume 1 was Meshbox Design's first bad guy series of models.
The Village Series
Meshbox Design's Village series of models are extremely popular with artists
and animators.
- Strong Outside Value. The Village Series of
models are designed to not only "fill in a background" but also
provide "inside" functionality. Designs are logical where possible,
inside and out.
- Continuing Logic. The Village Series volumes
are usually based around a specific culture. There may be variations
from one volume to the next but there is an internal consistency
so that its possible to mix one group with another.
The Models
The series includes the following models released to date...
- Orc Village Lighthouse. The Orc Lighthouse serves
the purpose of both communications signal fire and to ward off
orc boats and ships in the fog. The lighthouse has plenty of space
to store wood and oil to keep the lighthouse alight. The Orc Lighthouse
is reached by way of a bridge that is well guarded at all hours.
A middle section of the bridge can be added to and extended, allowing
great flexibility in using the lighthouse in a wide river or river
mouth.
- Orc Village Surgeon. Everyone dreads a trip to the surgeon since
unlike the Dragon Shaman, Bone Carver or Temple Priest, the surgeon
more often than not solves problems with ampuation! Given orcs
regenerative healing capabilities this isnt as problematic than
it is with a visiting ambassador from a human tribe. The building
includes private stalls where orcs can recouperate or get examined,
plus a well lit surgery - equipt with cutting tools.
- Orc Village Cottage.
This model has a simple outer design. A base stone foundation
could have been from the ruins of a previous civilization, upon
which
the crafty and survival oriented orcs add their own additions.
Wooden framing holds down a dragon skin roof. Every orc warrior
is expected to slay a dragon before he can form his own household.
Inside, there are two rooms - a spacious bedroom with furniture,
and a kitchen/dining room/living area. The living area has an
orc butsudan for revering his ancestors and the earliest defeated
foe
of his ancestors. An orc citizen warrior leads a rich though
humble life.
- Orc Village Noble House. The Orc Village Noble House combines
an Asiatic design with the dragon hide and dragon bone motifs of
the orc. The grounds are well defended with spears and halberds
within reach, and wooden platforms from above for defense. The
noble's family sleeps at the highest point of the house, protected
directly by the dragon hide roof. The Orc Village Noble House includes
color, bump and transparency maps that brings out details in the
dragon skin roof and stone texturing. Several props are available
that can be used outside of this model.
- Orc Village Stables.Orcs
prefer to fight from the advantage of high ground and in hand-to-hand
combat rather than mounted combat - though a rare orc sorcerer
will coerce a small dragon to carry him into battle. The Orc Village
Stable tends to hold beasts of burden and the beasts of non-orc
visitors who trade with the orcs. The Orc Village Stable is capped
in dragon skin in case of attack. The holding area is well protected
with a wall, and an interior stable protects more expensive beasts.
Water and feed troughs are in the yard. Additionally, a loft above
the stable can hold any sort of grain or hay.
- Orc Village Dock.Orc
Village Docks, like all orc architecture, is designed for easy
defense. The dock includes heavy winches for raising and lowering
cargo onto ships, extensive quays and walkways, a watch tower and
a covered cargo area trimmed in dragon skin.
- Orc Village Kiln Master. Orcs are an industrious people - often
making works that arent beautiful but more utilitarian. The Kiln
Master
creates
the
daily
pottery of the tribe, following ancient and effective techniques
known to all the free peoples. The Orc Village Kiln Master includes
a bump map that brings out details and pottery. Several props are
available that can be used outside of this model, including each
of the pots, the kiln itself, potters wheel and stool in Poser
PP2 format.
- Orc Village Drum Master. Other races do not
consider Orcs musically inclined, yet orcs have integrated music
into all labor intensive
parts of their lives in order to keep both citizens and slaves
highly productive. The drum master creates drums for both work and
war, from lowly materials such as cow hide to more noble materials
such as dragon hide.
